Cheshire Half Marathon Training

Whether this is your first attempt at the half marathon, or you are a seasoned veteran, this 10-week virtual and in person program will offer you training like you’ve never experienced before! Physical Therapist Dr. Duane Scotti and Coach Clay Tebbetts are teaming up to guide you in hitting your race goals without pain, rest, or becoming a frustrated runner. This unique program will provide you with structured guidance from cutting edge training principles from the training, prehab, rehab, and performance world! The end result will be a selfie of you at the Cheshire track with that medal around your neck and smile on your face after you met your race goal! Each week, Dr. Duane and Coach Clay will bring new concepts and techniques to make your race the best event possible for you. As you develop you will find the strength and endurance you gain from our training will prepare you for all of the elements that a late April race brings. You’ll be able to stand on the starting line with a whole new level of confidence in your ability to run faster than ever before without injuries along the way!

What you get by signing up:

  1. Each athlete will receive his/her own online training calendar on Training Peaks platform. Set virtually, you can adapt the schedule based on YOUR needs each week. Coach Clay will provide you a concept based on your current ability, guide your training every week along the way. This will culminate in reaching your best performance on race day
  2. Weekly communication from Coach Clay focusing on different aspects specific to development in endurance running and the Cheshire event.
  3. Weekly group runs based on your level (novice, intermediate, advanced) will occur with Dr. Duane every Sunday as we build up those long runs. These will occur right on the same terrain as a portion of the actual race course on the Farmington Canal Trail. You will have access to parking and bathrooms at Multisports Academy gym for these group motivational runs!
  4. All athletes will have access to a private Facebook group in which Dr. Duane will provide you with the running specific exercises you will need to do to stay healthy during your training so you don’t miss a run! Duane and Clay will also keep you motivated and have constant communication and answer all race related questions within our community every step of the way so you can confidently toe the line on April 26th!
  5. All athletes will have access to special discounts at Spark Physical Therapy and Multisports Academy gym in Hamden.

Duane Scotti, PT, DPT, PhD, OCS

Duane is honored to be founding owner of SPARK Physical Therapy and has been a leader in the rehab and running community for over 17 years. He is a physical therapist, educator, researcher, and strongly believes living an active lifestyle can help you stay healthy and live a pain free life. At Spark Physical Therapy, Duane guides his clients in achieving a high performance active lifestyle. You could be a runner who aspires to complete your first half marathon in Cheshire or you could be an experienced marathoner of 30 years. Duane has been the fitness and health support system and the go to resource for coaches, trainers and runners from all over the world. We have our clients’ best interest in mind and therefore to we strive to constantly put up new videos and blog posts to help our community stay healthy and perform at their highest capacity. Duane has successfully rehabbed and coached hundreds of runners back to PR’s over the years and has a passion for helping runners of all abilities to stay healthy and prevent injuries in order to get back to the workouts and runs you love!

Clayton Tebbetts

Clay launched Multisports Academy in 2006 when he became a certified triathlon coach by USA Triathlon at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO. Clay has been competing in triathlons since he fell in love with the sport in 1989. He is proud to have finished 15 Ironman triathlons including the Ironman World Championships in Kona, HI. Clay coaches athletes at all levels to help them reach their multisport goals. He has been the Yale University Head Triathlon Coach since 2009. Clay founded Team Mossman Triathlon Club in 1998 and Team Mossman Events in 2003. Clay teaches indoor cycle classes at Multisports Academy in Hamden 3 days a week and leads an adult swim program in New Haven as well. Clay has coached hundreds of athletes in swimming, biking and running and truly loves giving back to the sport.

Registration ends February 10th

“I developed IT band syndrome during my first marathon training cycle last year and ended up in physical therapy for about 3 months. I was told not to run if I had any pain at all. I lost so much time “recovering” that I ended up deferring my registration to the next year. I spent the next summer training for the same marathon when about 6 weeks out, that familiar IT band pain returned. I could barely finish a mile. I didn’t want to go back to my physical therapist because I knew what he was going to tell me. Stop running. I was so frustrated and started to feel like marathons weren’t for me. I stumbled upon the healthy runner podcast and learned that I don’t have to stop running in order to recover from injury! I was skeptical about an online physical therapy session. But I reached out to Dr. Scotti and he was able to give me the tools to mitigate my pain within the first session! I was able to complete my training cycle and made it to the finish line of my first marathon with his help! I highly recommend!”

“I suffered from IT band syndrome for four years before seeing Dr. Scotti in April 2020. Before then, I couldn’t run more than about 10 minutes without stabbing pain near my left knee. I’d seen various orthopedists, physical therapists, and chiropractors looking for some relief. My career needed me to run a mile and a half within a certain amount of time, and it was impossible to do so with the knee pain. I saw Dr. Scotti and he immediately got to work! That first visit, he helped me understand the anatomy and underlying cause of my knee pain (aka IT Band syndrome). Once I understood what was happening, the course of treatment made so much sense. Not only did he have online videos of all the recommended exercises to treat the problem, his “healthy runner” Facebook group, Podcast, and YouTube videos held a wealth of information and supplemented my plan. I soon understood that running wasn’t just a casual hobby – it’s a sport and one that deserves dedication and focus. Without his dedication to the sport and his community, I wouldn’t have realized this! Over the next few months, I had many ups and downs – victories and failures – and even some tears! Two steps forward and one step back. Dr. Scotti always checked in between appointments and tweaked my plan if needed. By August, I was regularly running 3-4 miles with barely any pain! If I did get pain, it was because my dedication and focus were lacking – and I quickly picked it back up and overcame. I’m so thankful I took another chance at having my knee looked at and trusted someone else. I run regularly now and am really enjoying it. I can’t thank Dr. Scotti enough and would highly recommend him to anyone having trouble.”
