5 Keys for Prevention of Foot and Ankle Injuries

We have a very special guest with us today.  Dr. Stefanie Flippin is not only a true expert in the foot and ankle working as a surgeon, clinician, and practice owner but she also a professional ultrarunner for HOKA, run coach, and the 2021 USATF 100 mile national champion and course record holder!

This conversation was such a treat as Stefanie may be one of the most positive spirits out there but I just loved her outlook on running injuries and our running community.

Listen to the Podcast Episode during your next run!

Stefanie is a professional ultrarunner for HOKA and resides in the Front Range of Colorado. She spent the first 22 years of her life in her hometown of San Diego, having graduated from the University of California San Diego in 2010. Stefanie comes from an extensive background in competitive ballet and didn’t turn to distance running until she was in medical school, as a way to manage her stress. She completed her first marathon in 2012 and soon after, ran her first 50 mile and 100 mile races. Stefanie is the 2021 USATF 100 Mile National Champion and course record holder, with her current PR of 14:35:20. She currently holds the 6th all-time fastest 100 mile time for an American woman. She is also the 2020 Tunnel Hill 100 female champion and has raced dozens of ultras from the 50k to 100 mile distances. Stefanie is the co-owner of her private practice, alongside her husband Mitchell, in Lakewood, Colorado, where she practices as a foot and ankle clinician and surgeon. She views all her patients, regardless of age and ability, as athletes and treats them as so – valuing mobility and staying active above all else. Stefanie is active in public healthcare and climate change policy development and has worked with the Colorado Governor throughout the recent pandemic. Stefanie is a plant-based athlete and highly values lowering her carbon footprint. Stefanie is a running coach with Lift Run Perform and leads an international to local team of athletes, focusing on anything from the mile up to 200 mile/multi-day races. She enjoys being involved in her local running community and is a strong believer in running’s ability to be a grassroots way to empower humans and build their confidence. Stefanie lives and trains at 8,700 feet with her husband and two high energy dogs, Shava and Pace. You can find her enjoying the views from local mountain peaks, pushing her limits along the way, and enjoying a craft brew after.

  1.     No patient should be treated the same
  2.     Find the right shoe!
  3.     Importance of active stretching and mobility routines

“I struggled to get back into running after being diagnosed with Osteoarthritis in my left knee. A friend of mine suggested I check out the Healthy Runner podcast and I’m glad I did! I was lucky to grab a spot in the Healthy Runner Coaching Program and I have gained so much from miles away. I’ve gained tools to be a lifelong runner through the run and strength plan. I’m constantly gaining more mobility and look forward to my future of running. Duane is a great coach that gives you personalized assistance and helps you understand any questions you have! Working with Duane has been a game-changer for my running. I’ve been in an endless cycle of injuries for the past five years and needed to make a change.

I connected with Duane through his Healthy Runner Facebook group, and then we began our virtual physical therapy visits. Virtual sessions work great for me because I’m constantly traveling and can access care wherever I reside. Even though I’m not in the clinic, I still receive the same quality of experience!

The best part is Duane is a physical therapist, runner, and coach, so he understands how important running is for our physical, mental, and emotional well-being! If you want to become a stronger, healthier, and faster runner, look no further!
